1a.  Walk on a rainbow trail; walk on a trail of song, and all about you will be beauty. There is a way out of every dark mist, over a rainbow trail.

--Navajo Song

We frequently travel to Hawaii and have taken university students and faculty there over the past 10 years. This picture was taken on a trip in 2005.  We were going up to Koke’e State Park on the Island of Kauai.  The sun was shining and a heavy mist was hanging in Waimea Canyon.  We pulled over and this fantastic rainbow appeared from one side of the canyon to the other.  It was a quick take, before the rainbow disappeared.

1b.
A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.

--Earl Nightingale

This photo was taken recently when we went to Niagara Falls for a reunion.  We were kept so busy going to various places that on our last night there I realized I had not taken a picture of the Falls.  We took a walk from our hotel and I captured this view from the American side, looking over to Canada.  The star effect around the reflecting light made this photo stand out from the others.

2a.
When your spirit cries for peace,  come to a world of canyons  deep in an old land:   feel the exultation of high plateaus,  the strength of moving waters,  the simplicity of sand and grass, and the silence of growth.      ---August Frugé

Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii is an ever changing environment.  Waipoo Falls is frequently hiked to by visitors. We have visited at least 12 times and have never seen it flowing full.  However in 2005 we spent time here with four others, and after they left we returned to spend a weekend in solitude at the cabin of a friend.  We were rained on both inside and outside of the cabin.  The rain was widespread and continued for our entire weekend at the park.  The benefit was this beautiful full flowing falls.

2b. The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Sanibel Island, where Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote these words is a favorite place of ours.  Hurricane Charlie in 2004 devastated many of the seaside resorts.  This one just reopened in the spring of 2006.  The yellow chairs and yellow umbrellas reminded me of something that Christo and Jeanne Claude might put together for a grand art exhibit, and here they were, making a statement all on their own.  The low light of the setting sun made the yellow that much more intense.

We, make the trip to Sanibel every year in April and love to watch spring arrive as we drive from Michigan south.  This past year we stopped in Ocala and stayed with Evergreen members there, permitting us to have an easy drive for our last day of travel.

3a. How much is a sunset worth?  There are such things as a sunset or a  beautiful sunrise that have no price.  Their value is what they do for you or to you. Each one of us has only so many sunsets and sunrises.  Let us learn to enjoy them  each day to the fullest.    --- Anon
When we go to Hawaii we always make sure to spend several nights at Koke’e State Park.  We spend our days hiking or working with the crew there who are trying to eradicate the forest of invasive species.  We have made many wonderful friends this way, and though they are not Evergreen members, the lodging (a bit on the “rough” side) is not much more expensive, and can be less if you wish to spend your time working in this way.

This allows us to be in the park at sunset and when ever we are there we will be at Kalalau Valley watching the spectacular show at dusk.  When the road is open to the furthest overlook, hike another mile down the Pihea Trail and the view is even better than this.

3b.  Manifest plainness, Embrace simplicity, Reduce selfishness, Have few desires.

---Lao Tzu,   The Way of Life

There are wonderful gems along the trails in Koke’e and throughout Hawaii, like this Uluhe Fern.  This is a small fern head that has yet to open.  The sun shining on it make it seem to glow this brilliant periwinkle blue.

4a.  A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.

Chinese Proverb

This South American Cardinal, sometimes referred to as a Brazilian Cardinal, is so pretty and is frequently seen flitting around the lookouts in Hawaii’s Waimea and Koke’e State Parks.  The challenge is getting him to sit still long enough to capture him on film.

4b.
Believe one who knows: You will find something greater in woods than in books.  Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters.   ~ St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Our son lives in Tellluride Colorado and we have driven there many times, always visiting Evergreeners along the way (Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Frisco, Glenwood Springs, Golden).  In 2005 we made a point of going in September so we could see the Aspen in their wonderful golden hue.  We were not disappointed.  This particular photo was taken in the area of Alta Lakes.

5a. Why not learn to enjoy the little things–  there are so many of them.  Anon

This Hapu’u fern is another of the many gems along Hawaii trails.  This is a fern head that will open and become one of the many fronds on a large tree fern.

5b.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

-- Ralph Waldoo Emerson

It is dusk and we are back at Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai in Hawaii waiting for sunset.  Some evenings the mist comes into the valley and it is impossible to see the sun set, but the world is constantly changing and we never stay away because each and every view is beautiful.  Depending on the sun the mist can appear purple, or blue, or pink.  Watching the mountain ridges appear and disappear through the mist makes the viewing spectacular.

6a.  A  thing of beauty is a joy forever:  Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness.

-- John Keats

Kalalau Valley in Koke’e State Park in Hawaii has to be one of the most spectacular places on earth.  We love the evening hours when the colors and clouds change continually, again the wonderful pink and lavender tones created when the setting sun shines on the clouds gives one another world experience.  Being patient and waiting and watching is a joy to behold.

6b.  The longer I live the more my mind dwells upon the beauty  and the wonder of the world.  I hardly know which feeling leads, wonderment or admiration.    –John Burroughs

One only needs to look at the number of pictures from the lookout at Kalalau Valley to realize the changing moods created here at dusk.  Now the mood is blue, the left side of the valley is seen through the clouds.  On this particular evening the clouds did not lift so that we could see the sunset, but the mist and changing colors were lovely too.

7a.  Live  each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.     --Henry David Thoreau

Here we are in the San Juan Mountains, south of Telluride, Colorado.  I thought the wood piles added to the aspens in this scene.  It told us, like the turning of the leaves, that winter was coming and it was time to prepare.  We had just visited the old ghost town of Alta and I thought of the harsh winters that the miners and their families would have had to prepare for there in the late 19th century

7b.  The influence of fine scenery, the presence of mountains, appeases our irritations and elevates our friendships.         --Ralph W. Emerson, “Culture” The Conduct of Life (1860)

When we arrived in Telluride Colorado in late September 2005 they had just had their first snow of the season.  The mountains were covered white and the aspens were still in their finest colors, the combination was breathtakingly beautiful.  We rode the gondola to the top of the mountain and hiked on up from there, and saw many scenes like this one.

8a.  October's  poplars are flaming torches lighting the way to winter.  ~Nova Bair

Poplars, or aspen as here, they did appear like torches, so bright and yellow against the blue Colorado ski.

8b.  The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.   --Ralph W. Emerson

As we were riding the gondola to return home from our hike, starting in Telluride’s (Colorado) Mountain Village the sun was getting low and shining on some of the houses in town.  Telluride has a national historic designation and the homes in the town must conform to their original roof height and footprint.  These few homes speak of the environment that is created here with no chain stores and the charming small community feel.

Hi Betty, (www.EvergreenTravelClub.com)
I can understand your search for good stories and interesting pics, but I don't know that we have a lot to contribute.  Our photography interest is primarily nature photography and though we have some spectacular (at least we think so) shots, they are in color and in the black and white newsletter they would not look like anything fantastic.  Those golden sunsets would not appear golden at all.   Some examples are attached.  A puzzle for you to figure out where they came from.  The possible locations are listed below, though I'll give you a hint.  There are none here from Alaska and the Olympic Peninsula, those are no longer resident on the computer.

Recent travels have taken us to Peru with Friendship Force (Trujillo, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca) and the Galapagos--not to Evergreen homes.  Also in the past couple of years we have traveled to Alaska and the Olympic Peninsula where we stayed with ATC members in both places.  A five week adventure to the islands of Hawaii and Kauai with two other couples found us camping and renting homes.  Last fall we did a southwest excursion and stayed with two Evergreen members in Colorado Springs, coming and going.  As always they were wonderful hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed our overnight with each of them.  We use Evergreen most often when we travel to the Rochester NY area where Dave's mother is in a residential home and has no guest room.   There we frequently stay with a couple that  has visited us too but have also enjoyed being hosted by several others in the Rochester area.

Though we usually think of traveling for enjoyment and meeting fellow members when all is well I have found Evergreen  very valuable on those occasions when the trip has not always been for pleasure.
A few years ago when I wanted to say my final goodbye to a cousin in West Hartford CT, it was wonderful to stay with a couple  who were within walking distance of her home. We head south to Florida every spring, but we've not yet completely adjusted to the relaxed "retirement mode".  That means we make the trip in a couple of days from Michigan, driving until very late at night, and leaving early in the morning, not the kind of visit we like to have with an accommodating host.
We have been disappointed that for most, Michigan must be off the beaten path.  We enjoy hosting, but only get about one call a year, and for the past couple years that one call has happened while we were away.  We think Kalamazoo is a special place with much to offer.  Coming up soon, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival which has top class musical venues from all over the world (check it out on the web).  This is an every other year happening and does bring people in from across the country.  Every August we host the national boys tennis championships, and in the spring the national girls softball championships. I would think there must be grandparents of these kids who are coming to watch and needing a place to stay, but so far they haven't found us.  Also Kalamazoo probably has more live theater happening continuously for a community of 150,000 than any place else in the country, a nice art center with special exhibits, like the three month Chihuly exhibit this past fall, a wonderful linear park for walking or biking or cross country skiing that goes 35 miles from here to the shore of Lake Michigan and then there is the actual Lake in the summer which is just 35 miles away.  There are frequent festivals, Greek, Irish, Wine, Blueberry all with something fun to offer.  In Grand Rapids, just 45 minutes north, is the Meijer Botanical Gardens and Sculpture park, the Gerald Ford Presidential Library.  An hour drive to the west and you can park free, take the Southshore commuter train into Chicago for the day and I don't have to mention all the possibilities there. Don't know that this is of any assistance.  Good luck on your quest. Lyn (and Dave) Hargreave, Kalamazoo, MI

9a.
Be like the bird, who halting in his flight on limb too slight, yet sings–knowing he has wings.

-- Victor Hugo
This red footed booby (Sula sula) picture was taken in the Galapagos in January 2006.  At that time of year, just the end of the dry season the trees are still barren and it is easy to spot the birds.  These birds are the only boobies who nest in trees, and indeed it is rare to see any other web footed species to perch on branches.  This is the smallest of the boobies and they are extremely colorful with their blue beaks and red feet.

9b.  Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have the eyes

to see them.    —John Ruskin

Red rocks of southern Utah frame this approaching rain cloud.  I enjoy finding an unusual foreground for pictures and the sun behind the dense cloud seemed to enhance this picture.  Southern Utah is not densely populated, making it lovely for those who love nature, but not very handy when trying to find Evergreen or ATC members.  There are camping cabins for economical accommodations.

10a.  It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds.  Aesop (c.530 B.C.)
The mating dance of these Nazca Boobies (Sula grantii) was fascinating to watch as they went around in circles clicking beaks.  It almost seemed like he was telling her to keep her mouth shut in this particular pose–or maybe she was telling him!  Taken in the Galapagos in January 2006.

l
10b.  Let us permit nature to have her way.  She understands her business better than we do.  ~Michel de Montaigne
This fallen tree, caught by its roots in an indentation of one of the many ridges at Bryce
Canyon National Park created an interesting image in colors and textures.

11a.  Men! The only animal in the world to fear.    --D.H. Lawrence, 1885-1930
Perhaps if this land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus), taken at the Charles Darwin Research Center in the Galapagos was huge is size it would create more fear, but it is only about 20 inches long, and was at least 8 feet away.  He was sunning himself making his yellow color that much more golden.  The nice thing about iguanas is that they don’t move fast and you can take lots of time getting just the right photograph.

11b.  Faith without works is like a bird without wings; though she may hop with her companions on earth, yet she will never fly with them to heaven.       --Francis Beaumont
A flightless cormorant (Nannopterum harrisi) stretches his wings to dry.  These birds have evolved and like other flightless birds the keel on the breast bone, which supports the large flight muscles, is drastically reduced. Instead, the legs are heavier and more powerful than in other cormorants. Unlike the penguin, whose wings are used as paddles to literally fly through the water, the flightless cormorant propels itself by powerful kicks.  Although all cormorants feed underwater, their feathers are not completely waterproof. Thus, upon emerging from the water, they typically stand for some time with their wings outstretched to dry.  (Dr. Robert Rothman, Galapagos, Seabirds)

12a. There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.   Robert Lynd

This red footed booby (Sula sula) is sitting on her nest.  The birds and animals of the Galapagos have no fear of humans and treat us like any other creature.  Therefore it is possible to get very close to them.  Though I did use a zoom lens for this photo I was probably within three feet of the nest.

12b.
Birds, the free tenants of land, air, and ocean, their forms all symmetry, their motions grace...   James Montgomery

Notice the color of the feet.  This, for obvious reasons is a blue footed booby (Sula nebouxii).  Male and females have slightly different colored legs and feet, the male being more periwinkle in color and the female more aqua.  This is a male.  These birds are great divers and one day we sat in zodiac boats with boobies diving all around us and penguins swimming everywhere.  No place but the Galapagos could we experience such wonder.

13a.  Animals are such  agreeable friends–they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.   George Eliot, Scenes of Clerical Life

“Oh, how good to stretch and feel the sun.  Am I not the most beautiful creature in the world” This sea lion (Zalophus galapagensis) in the Galapagos was posing perfectly as the sun was getting low in the sky, making him literally glow in the light.

13b.   The language of birds is very ancient, and, like other ancient modes of speech, very elliptical: little is said, but much is meant and understood.   --Gilbert White (1720-1793) English clergyman.

These Galapagos mockingbirds (Nesomimus parvulus) were doing a dance of some sort on the beach.  With the number of birds involved I am unsure if this was a display of anger or some type of mating ritual.  They did not hold their position for long so I had to take shots in quick succession in hopes of getting one that showed their display.

14a.  It's practically impossible to look at a penguin and feel angry.  --Joe Moore

Galapagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) are the northern most penguin.  They can be spotted sitting on the lava rocks around the western islands.  Here with a Sally Lightfoot Crab you can tell the picture is from the Galapagos, the only place where these two creatures exist together.

14b.  To the dull mind nature is leaden.  To the illumined mind the whole world burns and sparkles with light.    –Ralph Waldo Emerson

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park at sunset holds fantastic scenes as this picture of Wotan’s Throne at sunset shows.  One of our favorite things to do is catch the sunset where ever we are.  The low shadows and warm glow make for special photography, whether it is over water, in canyons or on a beach.  I’m sure dawn light is equally as enchanting but we seldom get up in time to get to the ideal viewing area in the morning light.

15a. I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contained, I stand and look at them long and long." ~ Walt Whitman

Not sure marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) are the exact animal I would choose to live with, but they are pretty self contained and it is easy to watch them for hours as they move about the water and slowly roam on the rocks here in the Galapagos.

15b.  Every  animal leaves traces of what it was; man alone leaves traces of what he created.

--Jacob Bronowski, The Ascent of Man

The profile of this creature, again a marine iguana ( Amblyrhynchus cristatus), was not to be missed.  For anyone who enjoys photography of birds and creatures like this fellow the Galapagos is a wonderful experience.  I can’t recommend any B&B but there are numerous ships where you can reserve a trip, travel between islands and observe the changing characteristics of the different species from one island to the next.
