Who are the members?

The Evergreen Club is a practical resource for travelers over 50 who enjoy people-to-people contacts. Club members are keenly interested in life and eager to expand their horizons. Some are still combining busy careers with travel, sports and other interests.

Others have become empty nesters and are ready to do some serious traveling. And many who have retired are finding themselves busier than ever -- running marathons, sailing around the world, doing valuable work as volunteers and still finding time for family, recreation, hobbies and yes, travel!

By pooling seldom-used guest rooms, members have developed a network of delightful lodgings for considerate travelers -- nearly 2,000 in North America alone. These are not costly commercial B&Bs, but down-to-earth, non-commercial lodgings in private homes with folks who care about you.

Information on Accommodations

Twice each year the club publishes an updated directory for members. The directory includes listings about each host & location -- employment, hobbies, points of interest nearby, information about pets, smoking, air conditioning, laundry privileges, and type of breakfast served. Based on this information, you select your accommodations and make arrangements directly with your hosts.

Hearty Breakfasts and Hospitality

Hosts provide clean, comfortable accommodations, hearty breakfasts, and an hour or so of friendly conversation designed to help you get acquainted and learn something about the area. Guests are expected to be self-sufficient, reasonable and considerate. You should plan outside activity during the day so your hosts can carry on with their normal routine.

But we realize it isn't for everyone. People who are short of time or require privacy, may prefer commercial lodgings. But membership satisfaction is guaranteed. If for any reason you are not entirely satisfied with how the club works for you, your dues will be refunded in full upon request.

The Evergreen Club is a traveler's delight because the primary focus is on friendly hospitality. Members share their lovely homes because it's such a practical thing to do. However, they're not in the B&B business. You won't find any expensive country inns in our directory, though the quality of our homestays may surprise you.

We had our first guests in October. They were looking for a place to moor their boat and we were pleased to be their hosts since we enjoy boating as well. I was treated like royalty by the Boones in Oregon. Before starting on my cross-country biking trip, Jack put my bike together. Then they loaded me with fresh veggies and berries for travel munching. -- L.B.

We recently returned from a trip to New Zealand and Australia. While there, we stayed with four Evergreen hosts. At each home, hospitality abounded and we were given information far beyond the tourist brochures. As we look back on our trip, even among the scenic wonders, our warmest souvenirs are of the people who 'Evergreened' us. -- P.B.

We were so pleased to receive a surprise call from Robert & Paula (VA) -- our very first guests. Much talk went on and I'm sure we could solve most of the world's problems between us, such was a the rapport. This part of France is a wild coastal area. We are known for the curious pre-historic megaliths, similar to the English Stonehenge, but more so. We look for more visitors this year, and also hope to revisit the USA again. -- P.&C.

When we had to evacuate due to a hurricane, we didn't know where we would go. As we drove, I checked the Evergreen directory for hosts in nearby states. We spent two days at the Barnetts and were made to feel at home, assured that if we ever needed to evacuate again, we had a place to go. It's great to make so many new friends with such ease. -- J.G

Frequently Asked Questions . . .

We realize you wouldn't want to jump right in without knowing more about the details. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

How much can I save as an Evergreen Club member? That depends upon how much traveling you do. Some members tell us they've saved more than $500 a year over the cost of commercial lodgings.

How are host homes evaluated? Hosts submit a photo of their home which we check to see that the home is attractive, in good repair, and that the grounds are well-kept. Beyond that, we count on members to let us know if a home does not measure up to the club's standard. (Complaints are very rare.)

How many Evergreen Club members are there? Since 1982 the club has grown from 68 members to over 4000 including spouses and companions.

What happens if a guest wants to come when I'm not going to be available? You needn't host unless your schedule permits.

How often must I accept guests? Only as often as it's convenient. There's no minimum requirement. On average, members host four or five times a year. But some host much more frequently, while others may seldom have requests to accommodate guests due to their location.

How can I participate if I don't have room for guests? Sorry, membership is open only to those who can serve as hosts.

Won't I feel awkward staying in the home of strangers? Cold feet warm up quickly in the company of people who genuinely delight in making you feel at home.

Is smoking allowed? Nearly all the host homes are smoke-free, although a few hosts permit smoking in designated areas. Each directory listing indicates whether your host smokes, and whether guests may smoke.

I often travel with a companion, though not always with the same person. How can I participate? You may apply for dual membership, listing the second person as "companion".

Are private bathrooms available? Often, but not always. Directory listings indicate whether a bathroom is private or shared.

Are there Evergreen hosts overseas? Currently, only about 5% of the club's host members live outside the United States.

Will my pet be welcome? Very few hosts accommodate pets. The directory listings will help you identify pet-friendly hosts.

How long may I stay with a host? Visits are limited to three days, although individual hosts may allow extended visits if they wish.

Are all host locations listed on the "Locations" page? New locations are continuously being added that aren't yet listed.

I don't have much time to socialize and I wouldn't want to seem unfriendly. Those who prefer to stick to the basics can indicate that in their listings. "Basic" means that your host has limited time to spend with guests due to employment or other responsibilities. So you should not expect anything more than a cordial welcome and a friendly visit over breakfast.

Many retired hosts enjoy spending more time with guests, perhaps dining out or sightseeing together. Such extensive hospitality is entirely voluntary, however, and is not a requirement of membership.

As a same-sex couple, would we be welcome in the Evergreen Club? While more than 80% of our members welcome everyone, those who prefer not to accommodate unmarried or same-sex couples indicate LIMITED in their listings. As a same-sex couple, just disregard the LIMITED listings and choose from the many others -- over 1,600 locations -- where you will be assured of a hearty welcome.

What is an e-member? This is a new membership category which will become available in the near future for those who prefer to receive fulfillment materials digitally rather than via hard copy. It will allow faster turnaround for membership applications, directories and newsletters as well as frequent communication via e-mail. Once it is available, each Evergreen Club member will be able to choose whether to continue as before, receiving notices and publications through the mail, OR to begin receiving all communications digitally.
