Update: Greek state-run TV reports that Sea Diamond's captain blamed currents for Thursday's accident, according to CNN.

"I felt the ship, which had been on a normal course, slip to the right because of sea currents," Greek TV quoted him as saying, according to the Associated Press via CNN.
"I gave the order for a full turn left. But there was not enough time for the ship to respond." The captain admitted in an interview that he attempted to free the ship from the reef before evacuating passengers as required by international rules, the prosecution official told CNN.

Australia's Sydney Morning Herald reports today that Greek authorities have announced plans to sue the cruise line.

(April 7, 12:13 p.m.) -- The captain and five officers of Louis Cruise Lines' Sea Diamond have been charged with "causing a shipwreck through negligence," according to media reports.

The six officers were also charged with "breaching international shipping safety regulations and polluting the environment," CBS News reports. All were released pending further investigation; the captain, chief mate, second mate, third mate, chief cabin steward and housekeeper had been arrested after the incident.

If convicted, the officers face a maximum sentence of five years.

On its approach to Santorini on Thursday, the 21-year-old Greek cruise ship struck volcanic rocks, took on water and listed 12 degrees. Passengers were evacuated in a three-hour rescue operation; some complained of an insufficient supply of life vests and little guidance from crewmembers, according to CNN. The vessel sank on Friday at around 7 a.m. local time. As of this morning, two passengers, whose cabin flooded with water after the ship hit the rocks, are still unaccounted for.

Joyce Gleeson-Adamidis, our Under the Captain's Table columnist who's been corresponding with us from Greece, says, "Currently the investigation continues for the two missing. Today, the captain and officers from the bridge at the time of the accident along with the chief and assistant housekeepers, the hotel director and his assistant from the Sea Diamond, have been brought to Naxos. Naxos is the central location for jurisdiction in this area.

"The captain is a young man who was recently promoted to his position."

According to Giorgos Stathopoulos, a spokesman for Louis Cruise Lines, "The vessel maintained the highest level of safety standards and was equipped with the latest navigation systems," CBS reports.

At this point it is difficult to say why the ship sank, Teijo Niemela, editor of Cruise Business Review and a Cruise Critic contributor, tells us -- but it is possible that the ship could have been saved had it been in shallower water. As an example, Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas similarly grazed a reef while departing St. Maarten back in 1998; like Sea Diamond, some watertight compartments were flooded, but the ship was intentionally grounded on a sandbar to prevent further sinking.

The water off the coast of Santorini, however, is quite deep; in particular, the rocks that the ship hit are part of a deep sea-filled crater formed by a volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago.

In other news, Louis Cruise Lines has announced that it has appointed a company specializing in the prevention and management of sea pollution to work with local Greek authorities in preventing any possible environmental consequences around the wreck.

Proceedings against Sea Diamond captain

A prosecutor on the Aegean island of Naxos on Saturday launched legal proceedings against the captain of the ill-fated Greek cruise ship Sea Diamond, that sank off the island of Santorini at dawn on Friday after striking a reef on the previous afternoon.

Prosecution concerns causing a shipwreck through negligence, causing pollution to the sea through negligence and failing to apply international regulations on avoiding collisions.

The prosecutor will also refer the captain to an investigator as a result of the two French nationals who have been reported missing, a 45-year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter.

All the remaining senior officers of the ship who had been brought before the prosecutor have been released.

The 20-year old cruise ship, run by Louis Hellenic Cruise Lines, sank at the sea area of "Old Mines" of Athenios, Santorini's harbour, after water flooded its engine room and decks 2 and 3 during the night.

The rest of the passengers (1,170), mostly Americans and Germans, and 390 crew of the ship were successfully evacuated within a few hours after the ship run aground. The "Aegean 2" ship arrived in the port of Piraeus on Friday morning transporting 296 passengers and 38 member of the crew. Louis Hellenic Cruises sent sent another cruise ship "Perla" to Santorini to transport the remaining passengers.

The sinking of the vessel caused an oil spill of a radius of 100 metres.

Greek cruise captain blames disaster on “strong currents”

The Greek captain of the cruise vessel “Sea Diamond” which sank last Friday, speaking on Sunday to government run Greek television denied responsibility for the incident and blamed strong sea currents for the disaster.

Speaking to Greece`s NET television Cap.Ioanis Marinos he said that the ship was on her proper course when suddenly he felt the ship veer to the right. He gave the command to go to port but said that the ship did not respond in time and they struck the reef.

He also said that he and some of his crew took their lives in their hands as they searched for passengers in their cabins as the ship took on a 20 degree list, saying he realized that control of the ship was now impossible as it had taken on water and was already sinking.

Indicating they had acted promptly and had to the best of their ability ensured the passengers of their safety he said that his crew informed him all passengers had been evacuated safely.
The search still continues however for two French nationals, a father and his daughter who, it would appear, did not escape from their cabin as it flooded with water.

The man`s wife and son were reported to have fled the cabin but they did not know what had happened to the other half of their family as events had happened so quickly.

“Sea Diamond” with 1.154 passengers and 391 crew sank in the Aegean Sea off the island of Santorini and is in water depths ranging 70 to 170 meters deep.
“I felt the ship, which had been on a normal course, slip to the right because of sea currents,” NET quoted him as saying. “I gave the order for a full turn left. But there was not enough time for the ship to respond.”

Authorities have not named the captain or five other crew members charged in the sinking. The captain was indicted along with the other crew members on blanket charges of causing a shipwreck through negligence, breaching international shipping safety regulations and polluting the environment, the Cyclades islands public prosecution office said. All have been released pending further testimony.

Most of the ship`s passengers were American, but also included groups from Canada, Britain, Spain, France, Australia, and the Dominican Republic.

The ship`s operator is part of the Cyprus-based Louis Group of tourism businesses, which has been involved in two other accidents in the past year.
The cruise ship Calypso caught fire in the English Channel last May and was towed to safety, with all 708 passengers unharmed. Last October, two British children were found dead at a Louis-run hotel on the Greek island of Corfu after inhaling carbon monoxide, believed to have come from a malfunctioning boiler.

Greek prosecutor launches legal proceedings against Sea Diamond captain

A prosecutor on the Greek Aegean island of Naxos on Saturday launched legal proceedings against the captain of the ill-fated Greek cruise ship Sea Diamond, which

sank off near the island of Santorini at dawn on Friday after striking a reef on the previous afternoon.

According to Athens News Agency, prosecution concerns causing a shipwreck through negligence, causing pollution to the sea through negligence and failing to apply international regulations on avoiding collisions.

The prosecutor will also refer the captain to an investigator as a result of the two French nationals who have been reported missing, a 45-year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter.

All the remaining senior officers of the ship who had been brought before the prosecutor have been released.

The Santorini Port Authorities were carrying out a preliminary examination on Friday, while the captain, the Second Mate, the helmsman, the first officer and four crew-members were giving their statements to shed light on the causes of the accident.

In his statement, the captain said that he was overconfident when the ship was entering the port, adding that he overestimated the capabilities of the ship when it approached the reef buoy.

However, he said that up to the last moment he tried to avoid the collision but in vain. This was his maiden voyage as captain with the Sea Diamond.

Sunken Ship Captain Blames Current

MORE than 1,500 passengers and crew were evacuated from a stricken cruise ship off the Greek coast today after it hit rocks and began to list during a tour of the Aegean islands.

More than a dozen ships were involved in the rescue effort

The Greek government said it was a “miracle” that there were no deaths or injuries between the moment the 472-foot Sea Diamond ran aground off the island resort of Santorini and when the rescue operation was completed this evening.

The ministries of defense, merchant marine, public order and tourism launched a massive rescue operation designed to prove that this sea-faring nation was highly qualified to tackle disasters at sea.

The operation involved two Greek naval frigates, seven helicopters, two passenger ferries and the island’s large fleet of fishing and tourism vessels, which all rushed to join in the rescue half a nautical mile from the shore.

Hundreds of schoolchildren were reported to be among the passengers, many of whom were spending the Easter holiday on group lecture tours. Passengers climbed down the side of the listing ship on escape ladders and scrambled on to boats. Many were seen hugging each other and wiping away tears once they reached Santorini.

“Thank God, our feet are touching ground,” said a Greek passenger, Efstathios Fotidi. “We heard a loud noise ... a few minutes later the ship started listing.”

There were reported to be British holidaymakers aboard the ship but most of the passengers evacuated to the island port of Thira during a three-hour operation were American.

Fani Pali-Petralia, the tourism minister, said: “This resembles an Easter miracle. Not a single person was injured, not a single person even got their feet wet.”

The crash in shallow rocky waters as the ship approached the island caused a rift in the hull and an intake of water which forced the captain to order the evacuation.

The Sea Diamond, operated by Cyprus-based Louis Hellenic Cruise Lines, was still in danger of sinking this evening after tilting 15 degrees.

A large tug boat, the Leon, was pulling the vessel towards the shore in an attempt to prevent it from sinking. Some of the crew of almost 400 and maritime rescue experts remained on board to assist in saving the ship.

The cruise company pledged to the Greek government that it would provide an explanation as soon as possible as to how the incident occurred in broad daylight and under good weather conditions.

The 22,412-tonne ship’s “black box”, the electronic recording device which traces every movement of a ship or plane, is to be examined by investigators.

According to legend, Santorini was home to the legendary lost city of Atlantis, which was destroyed and sank beneath the sea following a giant earthquake and volcanic eruption.

The ship had begun a tour of Greek Aegean islands on Monday, starting off in Athens and then visiting several islands with the focus on the current Greek Easter holiday week.

Michael Maratheftis, the local spokesman for the cruise company, said it would accommodate the passengers on Santorini before trying to put them on another ship tomorrow so that they can continue their holidays.

Sea Diamond Cruise Ship Sinks 15 Hours AfterPassengers and Crew Evacuated Near Greek Island of Santorini

About 1,200 passengers and 400 crew members were evacuated from the Louis Cruise Lines' cruise ship the Sea Diamond on Thursday, and the ship sank early Friday morning, 15 hours after it was evacuated. The ship was sailing near the Greek island of Santorini when she listed sharply after hitting some rocks near the main port of the island. Anyone who has visited Santorini will remember the volcanic caldera where cruise ships navigate and anchor before the passengers are tendered ashore. More than a dozen ships and five Navy helicopters answered the Sea Diamond distress call and assisted in the evacuation. No injuries were originally reported, but two passengers remained missing early Friday morning.

Louis Cruise Lines is a Cyprus-based company with a fleet of 10 ships. The Sea Diamond was built in Finland in 1986 and significantly refurbished in 1999. She was once named the Birka Princess, and sailed 3, 4, and 7-day cruises of the Greek Islands for Louis Cruise Lines since 2006.

SANTORINI, Greece (AP) -- Scores of passengers climbed down rope ladders to rescue vessels after a Greek cruise ship struck a reef Thursday in the Mediterranean and started listing, forcing the evacuation of 1,600 people including North Carolina high school students.

Authorities said most of the nearly 1,200 passengers on the Greek-flagged Sea Diamond were American tourists. At least two school groups from Canada, more than 100 Spaniards and a crew of almost 400 were also on board when the ship hit the rocks off the island of Santorini shortly before 4 p.m.

"A lot of us were taking pictures when we were coming into Santorini. All of a sudden, there was this big jolt," said Catherine Small, 17, one of more than two dozen students from North Carolina on board. (Watch passengers flee the listing ship Video)

"The ship was really far tilted. It was actually kind of freaking us out -- scary," said Small, who attends Chapel Hill High School.

Passengers said most people remained calm though there were some tense moments waiting for the rescue.

"People were nervous, women were screaming and it was a struggle to get to a life jacket. said passenger Ben Kucenko, a telecoms technician from Jeelong, Australia. "We were scared the boat was going to tip over. We could barely walk."

Tiffany Gittens, an event coordinator from New York, said at first passengers mistook the sound of rocks screeching against the boat for an anchor dropping.

"We were all sitting in the dining room, and the boat started to tilt and it started to tilt more to the other side," Gittens told the Associated Press, speaking by telephone from Santorini after her rescue.

"Everyone was pretty calm. A lot of the kids that were under 18, they looked pretty nerve-wracked. ... You'd see glasses fly by, and things got broken but everybody was pretty calm," she said. "They got us all on one side of the boat and we put on our life jackets. The (crew) did a pretty good job, they were well prepared for what happened."

More than a dozen ships were involved in the rescue effort, along with six navy rescue helicopters, two military transport planes and four warships.

"The ship was evacuated quickly and successfully. ... No one had as much as a nose bleed," Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis said.

"With a ship this size, it's like dealing with a 12-story building. It's a difficult operation," he said.

The Merchant Marine Ministry said 1,195 passengers and 391 crew members were on board. Most of the passengers were from the United States.

David Land, 17, of Middle Creek High School in Apex, North Carolina, said in a telephone interview that he was taken to a restaurant after being evacuated and was due to travel to Athens on an overnight boat.

"Everybody is perfectly fine," he said.

His mother, Deniece Land of Raleigh, North Carolina, said she had talked to her son several times this week during the trip.

Student: We're going down

"They had been around Greece and Athens and were coming back from Turkey. He called ... and he said, 'This ship is taking on water, and we're going down.' I said, 'Don't play with me.' He said, 'I have a life vest on.' "

Before reaching Santorini, the ship had stopped at the Greek islands of Rhodes and Mykonos and the Turkish resort of Kusadasi.

A group of 21 teenage students from Alberta, Canada, were "a bit shaken up," Tofield School Vice principal Clayton Roe said by telephone. "But they're OK."

On Santorini, tourists watched the rescue from the cliff tops of the volcanic island, looking down on the cruise ship stranded in a deep lagoon.

Hundreds of people were on the deck of the ship, waiting to be evacuated.

Giorgos Stathopoulos, spokesman for Louis Cruise Lines, a Cyprus-based tourism group that operates the Sea Diamond, said the ship had taken on water and listed 12 degrees. But it was stabilized when watertight doors were activated.

Passengers were taken by a small ferry and small boats to the island's main port.

Authorities said tugboats had been used to pull the ship free of rocks, helped by moderate prevailing winds.

Tourism Minister Fani Palli Petralia said the rescued passengers would be housed in Santorini hotels and return on chartered ships to Athens' main port of Piraeus early Friday.

"We are very happy with the outcome of the rescue operation. ... This is the start of an important tourism season with strong cruise bookings, especially from the United States," she said.

The 469-foot-long Sea Diamond was built in 1986 and refurbished in 1999.

Also Thursday, a Filipino sailor was killed in an accident involving a different cruise ship near the western Greek island of Corfu. The 47-year-old man died and three other crew members were injured when a lifeboat harness snapped on the Bahamas-flagged Astoria, authorities said.

The Astoria is operated by the Transocean cruise lines, based in Bremen, Germany.

ATHENS, Greece April 7, 2007, 2:39 a.m. ET · Navy divers searched the sunken wreckage of a cruise ship on Friday for the bodies of a Frenchman and his daughter who disappeared after the vessel foundered on a volcanic reef — the only two people missing despite what passengers described as a chaotic evacuation in the Aegean Sea.

Nearly 1,600 people were retrieved from the sinking ship in a three-hour rescue operation, but some passengers complained of an insufficient supply of life vests, little guidance from crew members and being forced into a steep climb down rope-ladders to safety.

"The crew members were more scared than we were," said Lizbeth Mata, 15, a native of the Dominican Republic who was vacationing with her parents and brother. Mata said some crew members left before the passengers: "They were yelling and screaming — didn't know what to do."

The 469-foot Sea Diamond struck rocks Thursday in the sea-filled crater formed by a massive volcano eruption 3,500 years ago off the island of Santorini. Tourists gathered on clifftops to watch the rescue effort at the reef, which is marked with warning lights and clearly indicated on navigation charts. The ship sank about a quarter-mile off the island's coast, in waters of uneven depth, a few minutes before it was to dock.

The ship's operator, Louis Cruise Lines, said the Frenchman and his teenage daughter were the only passengers missing, and insisted the 21-year-old vessel had been well maintained.

"The vessel maintained the highest level of safety standards and was equipped with the latest navigation systems," spokesman Giorgos Stathopoulos said.

The captain and five officers were summoned to appear at a public prosecutor's office on the island of Naxos to make a formal declaration of their version of events, which is standard procedure in such incidents. No charges have yet been filed, as it remains very early in the investigation.

State-run NET television said that investigators believed most of the damage to the ship's hull was done before the captain issued the distress signal, when he was trying to maneuver the ship away from the rocks.

Earlier, private vessels siphoned oil from the stricken ship in order to prevent further fuel leakage after a small oil slick appeared.

"The evacuation was orderly and successful. Every decision was taken in a way that would not endanger lives," Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyannis said.

The missing French passengers were identified as Jean-Christophe Allain, 45, and his 16-year-old daughter, Maud, from Doue-la-Fontaine in western France.

Divers inspected the sunken ship in search of their bodies.

Minister Fanny Palli Petralia, who spoke with Allain's wife, said the family's cabin filled with water when the ship struck the reef.

"She was not sure whether her husband and daughter made it out because things happened so suddenly ... in a few seconds. Her other child was up on deck and was evacuated safely."

Thursday's evacuation was the largest Greek rescue operation since September 2000 Express Samina ferry disaster, which killed 80 people near the holiday island of Paros when the ferry struck rocks and sank.

"We realized there was a serious problem ... we exited our cabin and it was tough to be able to walk out of the ship. A lot of people were very emotional over it, upset, very frightened," said Stephen Johnson, a Canadian tourist who was among the 1,547 passengers and crew rescued.

Passengers on the cruise were mostly American, and also included groups from Canada and Spain, France and the Dominican Republic.

Some of those rescued said they had confused the grinding sound when the ship first hit the rocks with the ship's dropping anchor. Australian passenger Katie Sumner said the early stages of the rescue were chaotic.

"We heard a big shudder and then the whole boat started to tilt," Sumner said.

"All of our glasses were sliding everywhere and our warning that the ship was sinking was some of the staff running down the corridor screaming out 'life jackets' and banging on doors, so we got no time to, sort of, get ready or anything, we just left as we were."
